HOW MUCH DOES THE PROGRAM COST?
Generally, the program costs about $9500.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM COST COVER?
The program cost covers a full semester’s tuition, homestay, meals, hotel stay at the beginning and end of the trip, and several field trips during the program.
WHAT ADDITIONAL EXPENSES DO I HAVE?
Your plane ticket, insurance, a fee to your University, and any incidental expenses, such as an occasional ice cream cone or a trip to the beach. You may also have a fee for a passport if you do not already have one.
WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?
Temperatures range from 65-80 degrees. It is a rainforest, so you should bring clothes that dry fairly quickly. It is recommended to bring a raincoat, rain pants, boots, approximately 3-4 pants, several shirts, and undergarments. Also bring at least one set of dress clothes for midterm and final presentations.
HOW WILL MY CLOTHES BE WASHED?
Most homestay families have a place to wash clothes. You may have to wash them yourself. But most of the time the family will wash your clothes for you.
CAN I STAY IN COSTA RICA LONGER THAN THE GROUP?
Yes, however, you need to set up your own travel and lodging accommodations.
WILL I BE ABLE TO DO MY OWN TRAVELING DURING THE PROGRAM?
Yes, however, because Monteverde is located in the mountains, travel during the course will be short. Mid-semester, students are given a week for vacation. Most students travel together to the beaches or volcano. Extended travel should occur before or after the course.
ARE THERE SNAKES AND SPIDERS?
Yes and no. In Monteverde, there are no dangerous snakes or spiders. You may see tarantulas at the Monteverde Reserve, but because they are nocturnal, they are usually only seen during night tours of the Reserve. You will not see them at your homes. The snakes of Monteverde are non-threatening, similar to those of New York. They are rarely seen.
HOW DOES THE MONEY WORK?
The currency of Costa Rica is the colon. As of November 2016, one dollar ($1) = 552 colones. Many places in Monteverde accept US dollars, but it is easier to convert your dollars to colones in Costa Rica. Visa is the most commonly accepted credit card. It is practical to bring extra funds, such as traveler’s checks.
DO I NEED TO GET A VISA?
For students from the United States, you will not need to obtain a VISA. However, foreign students from the University at Buffalo should check with the Study Abroad Office, located in Talbert Hall, North Campus. All others should check with the school at which they are registered.
