The Sustainable Futures program is hosted by the Monteverde Institute, a non-profit educational association established in 1986 by MVI residents. The Sustainable Futures course is one of many programs the Institute provides. The Institute designs and administers programs in tropical ecology, environmental education, public health, and agro-ecology in collaboration with foreign and Costa Rican institutions and groups.
As a local institution deeply rooted in and committed to the Monteverde community and area, the Institute also provides local educational, cultural, and social programs. Currently, the Monteverde Institute hosts the popular Music Festival celebrated annually between February to April.
